Any substance or mixture of substances manufactured, sold, or represented for use for the diagnosis, treatment, mitigation, or prevention of disease, disorder, abnormal physical state, or the symptoms thereof in man or animal.
Drug
A person authorized by the law of a province of Canada to treat patients with any drug listed or described in the Prescription Drug List.
Practitioner
Who is defined as a practitioner?
A physician, dentist, or veterinarian licensed to practice in the province of his or her employment.
An order by a practitioner directing that a stated amount of any drug or mixture of drugs specified therein be dispensed for the patient named in that order.
Prescription
To provide a drug pursuant to a prescription; does not include the administration of the drug.
Dispense

What is the PDA?
Is the primary provincial legislation regulating the sale of all drugs in the province of Alberta, administered by the Alberta College of Pharmacists
What is the VPA?
Defines the requirements for a “registered Veterinarian” (registered with the ABVMA) and further states that only a “registered Veterinarian” can engage in the practise of veterinary medicine, which includes, but is not restricted to, prescribing and dispensing of drugs.

Who can dispense a PDL?
DVM or RVT (non RVT staff can count pills and pick inventory but needs to be approved by RVT)

Controlled Drugs
3 mandatory things needed to prescribe controlled drugs
- the veterinarian is licensed to practice in that province,
- the animal is a patient under his/her professional care, and
- the drug is required for the condition being treated.
What is the TPP?
The TPP is a program administered by the College of Physicians and Surgeons that monitors the prescribing and dispensing of TPP-listed medications. This program allows for recording and tracing of all transactions involving substances of concern.
What are the TPP forms and pads?
- Every veterinarian is provided with their own TPP pad upon enrollment in the TPP. The forms are personalized with the veterinarians individual information and the veterinary practise location.
- Pads must not be share. You cannot lend your pad to a co-worker or any other prescriber. Verbal orders for TPP medications are not permitted.
