Four Physical States of Drugs
Liquids, Semi-solids, Solids, Gases
What are the 6 forms of Liquid Drug Forms?
Solution, Suspensions, Lotions, Liniment, Drench, Syrups
A mixture where the solute is completely dissolved in the solvent (solute is the dissolved substance and a solvent is the dissolving substance). They do not settle out (precipitate).
Solution
A mixture where the solute particles are large and suspended, but not dissolved in the solvent. The solute will settle out, so should be shaken well prior to use.
Suspension
Used for external (topical) or mucus membrane application. They are meant to be a soothing product.
Lotion
A topical application to counter irritation (a superficial irritation to relieve pain deeper). Can feel warm or cool on the skin depending on whether alcohol is part of the mixture.
Liniment
Is an liquid administered orally.
Drench
Contain the drug and a flavoring liquid for oral use.
Syrup
What are the 5 Semi Solid Drug Forms?
Ointments, Creams, Suppositories, Pastes, Gels
Are usually water in oil emulsions with oil being the greater component. They are not water-miscible. They are used for dry lesions.
Ointment
Are oil in water, with water being the greater component. They are water-miscible and are used for moist lesions.
Creams
Are used for insertion into the vagina, uterus, or rectum.
Suppositories
A common form of oral medication.
Pastes
Transparent or translucent.
Gels
