DR Session 2 Flashcards
Describe the body of the uterus
Upper 2/3 of the uterus
Dome shaped
Includes the fundus
What are the 2 openings of the cervix?
Internal os
External os
What does the internal os of the cervix allow?
Communicates superiorly with uterine cavity
What does the external os of the cervix allow?
Communicates inferiorly with the vagina
What is the shape of the external os of the cervix?
Narrow and circular in women who haven’t given birth
Transverse slit after childbirth
What are the layers of the wall of the uterus?
Perimetrium
Myometrium
Endometrium
What forms the recto-uterine pouch?
Pouch of Douglas
2/3 down the rectum the peritoneum is reflected on posterior surface of uterus
What forms the utero-vesical pouch
Peritoneum arcs between uterus and bladder
What are the parts forming the broad ligament?
Mesovarium
Mesosalpinx
Mesometrium
What is the mesovarium part of the broad ligament?
Posterosuperior portion surrounding the ovary
What is the mesosalpinx part of the broad ligament?
Small antero-superior portion enclosing Fallopian tube
Describe the ovarian ligament
Medial border of ovary to where Fallopian tube joins uterus
Describe the suspensory ligament of the ovary
Lateral border of ovary to parietal peritoneum
Describe the round ligament of the uterus
From fundus region of uterus
Travels across pelvic brim and enters deep inguinal ring where it crosses inguinal canal and exists pelvis
What suspends the ovaries?
Ovarian and suspensory ligament
What are the 2 endpoints of the vagina?
Cervix
Vestibule
What are the anterior and posterior fornix?
Recess where vagina attaches to the cervix
What are the parts that make up the vulva?
Mons pubis Labia majora and minora Glands of the clitoris Prepuce Urethral and vaginal openings
What is the recto-vesical pouch
From middle part of rectum to posterior surface of bladder and seminal vesicles
What is the pararectal fossa?
Peritoneum reflects laterally from sides of rectum to abdominal wall
Describe the path of the vas deferens
From scrotum to enter the abdomen
Within abdomen the duct appears from deep inguinal ring and travels to posterior aspect of the bladder. Diameter then dilates at distal end (ampulla)
What is the arterial supply to the vas deferens?
Vesicle and testicular arteries
What forms the ejaculatory duct?
Seminal vesicles joining with ampulla
Where is the prostate gland located?
Immediately inferior to the bladder
What is the clinical relevance of the small median lobe between the ejaculatory duct and urethra
Commonly becomes enlarged in benign senile hypertrophy of prostate
What does the spermatic cord do?
Contains supporting elements linking testes to intra-abdominal space
What is the tunica vaginalis
Encloses each testis and epididymis
Describe the tunica albuginea
Lies deeper than tunica vaginalis and covers outer surface of testis
