Q

What is the structure and function of DNA polymerase III

A

Major polymerase
-Synthesizes leading strand and okazaki fragments
-Requires RNA primers to begin synthesis
-> One at start of leading strand
-> multiple in lagging strand (due to lagging template running 3’-5’ away from replication fork)
-Primase: RNA polymerase that synthesizes RNA primers

Q

What is the structure and function of DNA polymerase I

A

-Removes RNA primers
-Fills gaps between Okazaki fragments
