Dna Repair Flashcards

Q
Types of dna repair
A
- Proofreading
- Nick translation
- Mismatch repair
- Base excision repair
- Nucleotide-excision repair
1
Q
When is dna repair really important?
A
If you get a mutation
2
Q
Nick translation
A
- Can remove and kind of mixup in the dna backbone
- can be fixed right on the spot
- 5’-3’ exonuclease activity if dna pol I
3
Q
Mismatch repair
A
- parent strand is methylated to shows its the “good strand” and you only fix the daughter
- the wrong nucleotide is removed from the daughter strand along with whats around it
- dna pol III comes back and fills in the gap
4
Q
Proofreading
A
3’-5’ exonuclease can remove the last nucleotide if an error occurs
5
Q
Base excision repair
A
- a damaged base is removed leaving an AP site
- an AP endonuclease removes the rest of that nucleotide
- dna pol III fills in the gap
6
Q
Nucleotide-excision repair
A
- commonly used for UV light damage
- the damaged area is removed and surrounding area
- dna pol I fills in gap
