DNA Replication Flashcards
What is the template made from
Dna
*youre making dna from dna
What are you synethesizing in replication
Dna
Parent dna vs daughter dna
Parent is what youre replicating
Semiconservative
One old strand and one new strand
Dna Helicase
-Unwinds DNA helix and separates strands forming the replication fork at the origin
Single stranded binding proteins
Bind and stabilize the single stranded DNA
Primase
- lays RNA primers on the leading and lagging strand
- has to be done for DNA pol III can work
Dna pol III
- Elongates new strands complementary to the leading strand(continuously) and the lagging strand(discontinuouslsy) in the 5’-3’ direction
- the fragments on the lagging strand are called Okazaki fragments
DNA ligase
- Joins the Okazaki fragments together
- seals the backbone
Dna pol I
Replaces the rna primers with dna
Topoisomerase
Relieves tension
Telomerase
- replicates the telomeres(end of the strand)
- it extends the strand so that another primer can be layed down and elongated
- — there is a little extra genetic info but nothing is lost
- the telomeres get shorter and shorter over cell division until you eventually start to lose genetic information
- doesnt happen inprokaryotes bc there is no ends
Dna pol I
Dna pol II
Dna pol III
Prokaryotes
Pol I- replaces rna primers and dna repair.
Exonuclease activity:3’-5’ and 5’-3’ exonuclease.
PolIII- elongation
Exonuclease activity: 3’-5’
Origin of replication in prok vs euk
Only one spot in prok, many in euk
Bi-direction prok and euk
Both are
