Distal limb Nerve Blocks Flashcards
Nerve blocks below the carpus are mostly what?
Sensory blocks. We are now too distal to hit muscular branches
What are some reasons that an animal could remain lame after nerve blocks?
- Poor block
- Diffusion into synovial structures
- Variant innervation
- Mechanical lameness rather than from pain
- Area of pain is more proximal
When doing nerve blocks, where do you start?
From bottom to top
Where is a palmar digital block?
At the proximal edge of P3. Put anesthetic around the nerve to diffuse into the nerve. Blocks palmar part of the foot, no toe region
Where is the basisesamoidean nerve block?
At the base of the proximal sesamoid. Blocks the whole foot
Where is the Distal metacarpal block?
Palmar and plantar nerves as well as palmar and plantar metacarpal nerves below the metacarpal nerves. 4 point block: 2 nerves on both sides have to be anesthetized. Block everything from the fetlock down
What are the landmarks for distal metacarpal blocks?
- Between interosseous and flexor tendons (palmar nerves)
- Level distal from end of splint bone (metacarpal nerves)
What does a proximal metacarpal block?
Fetlock down as well as proximal parts of the suspensory
What does a suspensory nerve block?
All fetlock joint, origin of suspensory, and part of the carpal joint
