What children how do they present
1 condition eg Down’s syndrome 2 prem infant (targeted screening) 3 universal screening 4 parental concerns 5 failure to attain milestones
Intellectual disability
Deficits in general mental abilities
Results in impairment of adaptive function onset BEFORE 18years
ADAPTIVE function is the important thing IQ<70 2% of the Australian population
Causes of ID
Prenatal
Genetic eg Down’s syndrome / metabolic /fragile x/ microdelitions
Dysmpophic syndromes
Acquired toxins. Hypoxia/ infections /drugs /alcohol
Perinatal. Hypoxia/infections/ prematurity
Postnatal hypoxia /trauma/
Globally tetnus
Children with ID have increased risk of comorbidites
Obesity
Psychiatric disorders /challenging behavior
There are sensitive/ critical periods eg vision and language
Periods in development where a number of factors brain development sensory input, environmental factors act to promote the acquisition of a particular skill
Eg vision binocular vision and cataract
Deafness give the cochlear implant before 12/12 to enable acquisition of speech
