Reactions can be immediate Delayed Urticaria Angie Emma Allergic rhinitis Atopic dermatitis some due to allergy Asthma 2-27% allergy food Vomiting IgE fast 5-30mins profuse vomiting till the allergen gone (DD acute abdomen) Delayed 2hours after food non IgE mediated

Cows milk. First 3 make up 90% currently
Eggs
Peanuts
Others fish/ soybeans wheat
Diagnosis of allergy
1 history is very important 2 SPT (RAST) False -ve 1too young infants 2 GIT reactions primary 3 on antihistamines 4 non IgE mediated problem
Natural history of food allergens
Cows milk and egg allergies 90% gone by 5 years
Cooking reduces the allergenic nature of the food
Peanuts and shellfish and fish NOT LIKELY to grow out of
20% improve rest go on in adult hood
Prevention strategies for food allergies in high risk infants
1 pregnancy avoid smoking
2 infants BP 4-6months
No evidence of low allergy formulas
No evidence for delaying the intro of allergies foods in fact may INCrease the risk
No evidence for avoiding foods in no allergies in the mother
Potential problems for allergy avoidance
Malnutrition
High cost
Social isolation
Anxiety
