DIRECTIVE 035 DIRECTIVE 044 Flashcards
What does AER encourage industry to continue doing in relation to water wells?
Encourages oil and gas companies to continue current practices of
- collecting baseline water quantity and quality data for
- water wells in close proximity to
- any energy development well
- prior to drilling and to
- submit these data to AENV.
What new requirements will apply to well licence and recompletion?
Mandatory Baseline water well testing
- coalbed methane (CBM) above the base of groundwater protection (BGWP)
- The test data and analyses are to be submitted to* AENV and the landowner/occupant
PRIOR to filing new well licence applications (CBM above BGWP) what MUST licensee do?
MUST offer to test any active water wells and observation wells within a 600 m radius
“An applicant MUST offer to test any active water wells and observation wells within a 600 m radius of proposed well”. (Directive 056)
Why would a company want to offer to test wells in close proximity to their activity?
- If Audited - must show documentation that proves an offer to test was provided (meet AENV standards)
- Coalbed methane companies want to to de-water any coal bed zone
- must get Alberta Environment approval if it is above the base of groundwater protection.
• If selected for audit review, the licensee must submit documentation that proves that at the very least, an offer to test had been provided to the landowner in accordance to AENV standards. • Coalbed methane companies must get Alberta Environment approval to de-water any coal bed zone if it is above the base of groundwater protection. To receive approval, companies must demonstrate no impact to other water users. Approximately 90% of rural water supply comes from groundwater sources.

What is Directive 44 about?
Directive 044 provides
directions on sampling and analysis of water production in hydrocarbon wells.
