Q

What are the different types of Crude
1 3rd largest proven oil reserve
2. Oil sands are a mix of water, sand clay and bitumen needs to be Diluted or heated important

  1. thousands of consumer products

bitumen needs to be diluted or heated before transported by pipeline

lighter oil is added to bitumen to make it more viscous and less dense

diluted bitumen (dibit) is similar to conventional crude oil

three important characteristics to classify them:

A
  1. Density
  2. viscosity
  3. Sulphur content

Q

role of pipeline

A
  • the best way to safely transport different batches of unrefined crude oil
  • different grades or varities of crude oil
  • to refineries
  • converted into petroleum products
  • shipped again through a variety of ways including pipeline
  • consumer or industrial products
  • Canada or exported

Q

keeping close watch

integrity is about preventing spills and leaks by making sure pipelines are built and operating as safely as possible.

That’s why pipelines are regularly inspected until it is retired

the inspections include:

A
  1. examining pipelines with Xray, ultrasound, mag part insp
  2. using Aerial surveillance
  3. have employees walk the ROW
  4. inspecting inside the pipeline with smart pigs

integrity dig Steps

s 1 & 2

1

2.Create a safe work environment

  • the entire dig will be flagged
  • mark buried facilities
  • establish route to site
  • weather protection
A
  1. Determine exact location
    1. the engineer will tell you where they want to make the integrity dig
      • between s1 and s2 talk to the landowner to get temporary access
        • pay access damages upfront
          • fences, rocks etc
        • need temporary workspace for diagnostic team
