decv6 handout no 13 & 14 Flashcards
What are the different types of Crude
1 3rd largest proven oil reserve
2. Oil sands are a mix of water, sand clay and bitumen needs to be Diluted or heated important
- thousands of consumer products
bitumen needs to be diluted or heated before transported by pipeline
lighter oil is added to bitumen to make it more viscous and less dense
diluted bitumen (dibit) is similar to conventional crude oil
three important characteristics to classify them:
- Density
- viscosity
- Sulphur content
role of pipeline
- the best way to safely transport different batches of unrefined crude oil
- different grades or varities of crude oil
- to refineries
- converted into petroleum products
- shipped again through a variety of ways including pipeline
- consumer or industrial products
- Canada or exported
who is CEPA
CANADIAN ENERGY PIPELINE ASSOCIATION
Whats an integrity dig?
a precise operation that spans several days that look for anomalies in a pipeline to determine if a repair or replacement is needed to maintain the integrity of the pipeline.
keeping close watch
integrity is about preventing spills and leaks by making sure pipelines are built and operating as safely as possible.
That’s why pipelines are regularly inspected until it is retired
the inspections include:
- examining pipelines with Xray, ultrasound, mag part insp
- using Aerial surveillance
- have employees walk the ROW
- inspecting inside the pipeline with smart pigs
unearthing issues
integrity dig Steps
s 1 & 2
1
2.Create a safe work environment
- the entire dig will be flagged
- mark buried facilities
- establish route to site
- weather protection
- Determine exact location
- the engineer will tell you where they want to make the integrity dig
- between s1 and s2 talk to the landowner to get temporary access
- pay access damages upfront
- fences, rocks etc
- need temporary workspace for diagnostic team
- pay access damages upfront
- between s1 and s2 talk to the landowner to get temporary access
- the engineer will tell you where they want to make the integrity dig
STEP 3
Strip the top soil
followed by other layers
preserve all layers
excavate to expose the pipe (and deeper because they need 360 access)
what’s an anomaly?
Anything that seems out of the ordinary including
- corroion
- dents
- metal loss
- geotechnical issues
STEP 4
Remove the coating
clean the pipe surface pipe surface
visually inspect any anomalies with magnetic particle inspection and ultrasonics
divert the product around the segment that’s being repaired
BETWEEN 4 AND 5
“OPEN HOLE TIME”
could be open for a month
- keep communication w L/o going
- careful with land stalk
- fences
- cows are snoopy
*
5
maintain or repair the pipe segment
this may require a protective sleeve over the anomaly or replacing the short or replacing the short e=segment
recoat the pipe with high performance coating.
six
backfill the excavation carefully
- backfill the excavation carefully
- remove any rocks or other objects that could damage the pipe.
- cleanup and return the land to its original state
maintain kick rocks receed
