Cranial or Cephalic
Toward the head
Posterior or Dorsal
The back surface (backside)
Anterior or Ventral
The front surface; the belly
Proximal
Toward and attached base (i.e. shoulder is proximal to wrist)
Distal
Away from an attached base
Lateral
Away from midline
Medial
Toward the midline
Caudal
Toward the tail
Superficial
at, near or on the surface of the body
Deep
toward the interior of the body; away from the surface
Frontal or Coronal Plane
Plane is parallel to long axis; separates anterior and posterior sections of the body; (coronal = section passing thru skull)
Sagittal Plane
Separates right and left portions (cut down the middle, examine a sagittal section and cut sagittally)
Parasagittally
cut sagittally but uneven on right and left side
Transverse or Horizontal Section
separates superior and inferior parts of the body; cuts body in half at waist
Thoracic Cavity
Contains:
Pleural cavity - lungs
Pericardial cavity - Heart
