Beginner Vocab Flashcards
Homeostasis is
the maintenance of a relatively constant internal environment
Homeostasis part one / Function
Receptor: Sensor sensitive to environmental change
Homeostasis is controlled by
nervous system and endocrine system
Homeostasis part two / function
control center: receives and processes information from the receptor
Homeostasis part 3 / function
Effector: Responds to control center commands
Negative Feedback
effector negates the original stimulus (tries to “undo”). Negative feedback minimizes change.
Positive feedback
effector enhances original stimulus and accelerates change (adds fuel to the fire!)
Positive feedback is necessary when…
potentially dangerous processes need to happen quickly before homeostasis is restored (like a blood clot)
