Direction Terms and Planes Flashcards
Median plane
Divides the body into equal right and left halves
Sagittal plane
Parallel to the median plane, divides into unequal portions.
Transverse plane
Right angle to the median plane and divides the body into cranial and caudal parts (cross section for example).
Dorsal plane
Right angles to both the median and transverse planes. Divides the body into dorsal and ventral segments.
Cranial
direction towards the head. In the eye, it is known as “anterior”
Caudal
direction towards the tail. In the eye, it is known as “posterior”.
Dorsal
direction toward the back, away from the ground
Ventral
direction toward the abdomen
Palmar
caudal surface of the forelimb, distal to the carpus
Plantar
caudal surface of the hindlimb, distal to the tarsus
Rostral
part of the head closer to the nose.
Medial
toward the median plane.
Lateral
away from the median plane.
Superficial
towards the surface
Deep
toward the center of the body or body part
