Digestive System Flashcards
Upper GI
Esophagus and Stomach
Motility & Peristalsis
Motility is movement of the anatomical structures that allow contents to pass thru.
Peristalsis is the muscle action of the GI system that pushes food thru the body during digestion.
Liver and Gall bladder
Liver produces bile
Bile is stored in the Gall bladder.
Gall bladder releases bile into the stomach at the duodenum.
Chyme
Food mixed with digestive juices.
Small Intestines components
Duodenum: has ducts linking the pancreas, liver & gall bladder.
Jejunum
ileum
Absorption of carbs, protein (aminos), lipids, calcium & iron occur in the duodenum & jejunum.
Absorption of salts, water, vitamins & electrolytes occur in the ileum.
Enteric Nervous System
The nervous system in the GI tract. As many nerves in small intestines as in the entire spinal cord. Can work on its own w/o input from the CNS.
Lower GI
The colon. Serves to absorb electrolytes, water and vitamins & has little to no digestive power. *Most fluid is absorbed in small intestines.
