What is 4 deprivation AO1s?
- loss of primary attachment figure
- attachment formed is broken
- can be short term or long term
- if long term the effects can be irreversible
What are causes of deprivation?
- daycare
- death
- divorce
- hospitalisation
what is short term deprivation?
when a child is seperated from their primary caregiver for a short period of time e.g. daycare
what is long term deprivation?
when a child is seperated from their primary caregiver for a long period of time e.g. hospitalisation
what are the stages of short term deprivation?
P- Protest- child shows great distress- calling for mother
D- Despair- calmed down but disengaged from others
D- Detachment- child coping with the seperation and start to explore surroundings but won’t make new attachments- reestablish relationship when caregiver returns
Long term deprivations 4 AO1s
- bowlby felt that children must have constant presence of caregiver throughout critical period
- breaking of this bond affects personal/intellectual/social/growth/ could result in affectionless psychopath
- effect of deprivation is permanent and irreversible
- results in broken internal working model
what are the affects of long term deprivation?
- depression/anxiety
- dwarfism
- poor social skills
what can be done to reduce deprivation affects?
- provide continuous substitute figure
- reduce time spent away from attachment figure
- maintaining regular contact with estranged partners will reduce seperation affects
- regular routines at daycare
