what does ABA do?
looks at environmental factors that can be manipulated to alleviate the effects of autism
what type of learning theory does ABA use?
operant conditioning
what essentially does ABA do to change behaviours?
1- demonstrates ideal behaviour
2-rewards child every time they improve their behaviour
what does ABA not do?
punish child for ‘bad’/wrong behaviour-just ignores
how is ABA good for people with autism? (4)
- individual so very adaptive to autistic person’s needs
- can be done in various settings e.g. clients home
- can be done in a group or on 1:1 basis
- ideal as helps those in any position o the spectrum
what characteristics of autism can ABA help with? (2)
- help with social interactions-making friends
- communication-delayed language
what characteristics of autism can ABA not help with?
can’t explain/help with imagination/pretend play
what activities can ABA help with? (4)

-reading
academic skills

Ellis’ ABC model
what is Discrete Trial Training? (3)
- breaking down complex skills into smaller steps
- teaching each steps hierarchical
- from simple to more complex
what are the steps in ABA? (7)
1- choose behaviour or skill deficit 2-identify goals 3-finding a way to measure the behaviour 4-get a baseline measure 5-designing and implementing interventions 6-measure the effectiveness 7-evaluate and plan the next steps
SUPPORTING (2)
- Cebula-135 fams- 71 fams using/had used ABA- found more positive interactions between autistic people and siblings
- Gale- food held on spoon for 30s in front o child-acceptance of food increased/disruptive behaviours decreased-supports no punishment method
CONFLICTING (1)
-Warren et al- reviewed studies of ABA clients-those under 2 were promising but overall inconsistent
