Department of Defense
-in charge of nation’s armed forces, operates military bases in U.S., and other nations
Joint Chief of Staff
-highest ranking military officers of each of the armed forces form together and advise the President on military affairs
Department of Homeland Security
-protects against terrorists attacks and provides federal assistance when disaster occurs in U.S. (hurricanes)
Treasury Department
-promotes conditions for economic stability and prosperity in U.S. and rest of the world
Department of Justice
-enforces laws, ensures public safety against foreign and domestic threats, & prevents and controls crime
-Ensures justice for all Americans
Independent Agencies
-those agencies that exist outside of the federal executive branch (perform specialized jobs)
Regulatory Commission
-type of independent agency that implements and enforces laws
Bureaucracy
-a system of government in which most of the important decisions are made by state officials rather than by elected representatives
-A complex structure with multiple layers and procedures.
