Deck 2 Flashcards
Naturalistic observation
Descriptive stat, researcher engages in observation of behaviour in a real world setting
Normal distribution
Distribution with a smooth, symmetrical, bell shaped curve around a single peak
Paradigm
Set of assumptions and ideas
Ob-ob mouse
Mice with a genetic mutation resulting in extreme obesity
Operational definition
defining something with measurable (often objective terms)
Outlier
Value that lies beyond most other values in a data set
Participant
Person whose behaviour is studied during a study
Placebo effect
Exhibiting the effects of a perceived treatment when none was given
Population
Full group of individuals the research is seeking to understand
Practice effect
Improved performance over the course of a study due to practice
Psychological test
Standardized measure of a person’s behaviour
Questionnaire
Set of questions a participant responds to
Random assignment
Randomly assigning participants to the control or intervention group
Random sample
Randomly choosing a set of subjects from the population being studied
Raw data
Data that has not yet been interpreted or assessed with statistical analyses
Reliability
Measure of consistency in a test
Replication
Being able to get the same results by repeating a study
Response set
Participant tendency to answer questions to look good
Sample
Group of participants in a study from the population of interest
Sampling bias
When the sample does not accurately represent the population it’s from
Scientific method
Formal method to examine and answer scientific questions
Social desirability bias
Answering questions in a way that makes is more socially approved
Statistically significant
When the probability that the finding is due to chance is very low
Standard deviation
how dispersed the data is in relation to the mean
-low = clustered around mean
Theory
Set of statments or principles that try to relate and explain an observation
