Q

Why should one punch a shark in the nose?

A

possibly the electroreceptors that are located in the nose. however, the nose being so close to the mouth makes it a risky move. Going for the eyes and the gills might be a better option.

Q

How do sharks detect electrical currents?

A

100s of thousands of electroreceptors dot the skin of their heads. They pick up signals that muscles emit like a beating heart or a twitching fin. This helps sharks target their prey as they swim in.

Q

Are jet skis bad for the environment?

A

Until recently, all personal watercraft ran on two-stroke engines. Two strokes are notoriously bad for the environment for several reasons. First, they don’t just run on gasoline; they run on a mixture of gas and oil. Burning oil is even worse for the environment than burning gas, because it doesn’t burn very well.
Second, traditional PWC two-stroke engines are so inefficient they end up dumping up to 30 percent of their fuel into the water unburned [source: BWN]. In a single hour of run time, a 2000-model PWC will dump about 4 gallons (15 liters) of unburned oil and gas into the water. Engines have become cleaner since the EPA required them to comply with the clean air act of 1990

Q

2-stroke pros and cons versus a 4-stroke engine

A

Pros: (lightweight, simplicity - 30 to 50% fewer parts, easier to clear of water)
Cons: (increased fuel consumption, elevated hydrocarbon emission)

Q

Do giant squids exist?

A

most of what we know comes from dead carcasses that floated to the surface and were found by fishermen. The species was first recorded live in 2006, after researchers suspended bait beneath a research vessel off the Ogassawara Islands. The squid was 24 feet.

Q

Why is ricotta not considered cheese

A

Cheese is made by heating milk, with leftover whey, and calf rennet so that the milk forms into curds. Ricotta is made entirely from whey. Ricotta comes from the Italian word for “recooked” because the whey is heated again to make ricotta.

Q

Is blue fin tuna what is in sushi?

A

Yes, but maguro is the more common which includes big-eye and yellow fin tuna. Blue-fin is the most prized, but is controversial to eat because of sustainability issues.

On Monday, a single 380-pound bluefin tuna sold for about $37,500 in the first auction of the year at the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo. That’s far below the peak price of $1.76 million that a bluefin went for at the same market in 2013, and this year’s price isn’t a good indicator of the supply, or population status.
