Q

mesotherms

A

animals with medium-powered metabolism

“Grady said an intermediate metabolism may have allowed dinosaurs to get much bigger than any mammal ever could. Warm–blooded animals need to eat a lot so they are frequently hunting or munching on plants.”

About the study: Scientist evaluated the metabolisms of dinosaurs by comparing their body mass (size of thigh bones) to their growth rates (growth rings in fossil bones similar to rings on a tree).

Q

how do endotherms generate body heat?

A

heat production is a byproduct of metabolism, or the sum of the chemical processes in the body. When the body breaks down food molecules, the energy in the chemical bonds of the food is released, which powers the body. However, the human body is only about 25 percent efficient, meaning that 75 percent of the energy from the food is released as heat.

Q

Why does drinking a hot beverage cool you down?

A

there are many of a type of heat sensing receptor in the tongues nerve cells.
When the brain gets the message “It’s hot in here,” it thermoregulates by sweating and dilating the blood vessels. While the hot drink makes you hotter temporarily, the bodies thermoregulation response exceeds the hot beverage’s effect in terms of heating your body.
