Day 5 - GI Flashcards
Is blood in the stool only found in large volume diarrhoea?
No false
What is most likely to cause heamatemesis?
Mallory-Weiss Tear
Ejection phase
Retching starts to occur; this is followed by contraction of the abdominal muscles and diaphragm. Vigorous contractions occur with relaxation of the esophagael sphincter forcing stomach content through the esophagus and out of the mouth
Pre-ejection
The gastric muscles relax. Reverse peristalsis occurs mixing contents of the intestines with the stomach. Abdominal muscles start to contract ready to expel the contents; and the pressure in the thorax (chest) decreases preparing to allow passing of the vomitus. The oesephageal syphincter relaxes.
Vomiting is controlled by the vomiting centre in the brain. Where in the brain is the vomiting centre found?
Medulla Oblongata
