This is wood that comes from deciduous trees
Hardwood
This is wood that comes from evergreen trees. These are trees that do not lose
their leaves in winter, and have needle-like pine trees.
Softwood
These are trees that lose their leaves in winter.
Deciduous
These are trees that do not lose their leaves, and often have leaves like sharp
needles.
Evergreen
This is used to describe a metal or alloy containing iron.
Ferrous
This is used to describe a metal or alloy containing no iron.
Non-ferrous
This is a set of particular colour harmonies, typefaces and compositional styles. But
on a higher level, design styles usually carry with them certain principles of what
the goals of design are, and techniques for how to accomplish those goals.
Design Style
This is a type of visual presentation or a collage consisting of images, text, and
samples of objects in a composition. It can be based upon a set topic or can be any
material chosen at random. A mood board can be used to convey a general idea or
feeling about a particular topic
Mood Board
This involves showing by reason or proof, explaining or making clear by use of
examples or experiments
Demonstration
These are timber sheets which are produced by gluing wood layers or wood fibres
together
Manufactured boards
This is a workbench accessory used in woodworking to hold work pieces in place.
Using the force of the tool being used and gravity, bench hooks can make hand
sawing safer and more accurate, without needing to use a vice.
Bench hook
This type of saw has a sturdy ridge on the back of the blade to prevent the blade
from bending. It is used for cutting wood, specifically larger pieces that only need to
be cut in straight lines
Tenon Saw
This is a type of bow saw used to cut intricate external shapes and interior cut-outs
in woodworking or carpentry. It is widely used to cut mouldings to create coped
rather than mitre joints
Coping Saw
This is also known as a scratch gauge and is used in woodworking and
metalworking to mark out lines for cutting or other operations. The purpose of the
gauge is to scribe a line parallel to a reference edge or surface.
Marking Gauge
This is a process by which entities review the quality of all factors involved in
production
Quality Control
This is a shaped piece of rigid material used as a pattern for processes such as
cutting out, shaping, or drilling.
Template
This was a circle of Dutch abstract artists who promoted a style of art based on a
strict geometry of horizontals and verticals.
De Stijl
This refers to a global movement in society and culture that from the early decades
of the twentieth century. It sought a new alignment with the experience and values
of modern industrial life.
Modernism
This is also known as a caliber and is the mechanism of a watch, timepiece or
clock.
Movement
This is an art movement that emerged in the 1950s and flourished in the 1960s in
America and Britain, drawing inspiration from sources in popular and commercial
culture
Pop Art
The art or profession of visual communication that combines images, words,
and ideas to convey information to an audience. Designs typically involve
typography, visual arts, layout and composition.
Graphic Design
A 3D drawing on a 2D surface
Projection
This is studying the outcome of a design, to see how it performs.
Evaluation
This is the opinions of others, used to further develop your work.
Feedback
What does CAD stand for?
- drawing and developing designs using computer programs.
Computer Aided Design,
This is a 3 dimensional drawing technique using lines at 30 degrees from the
horizontal.
Isometric
This is paper created with the guidelines drawn vertically and at 30 degrees
from the horizontal to aid drawing.
Isometric grid
This is a technique used to draw objects where the initial sketch is based on
boxes or crates
Crating
This is a simplistic drawing technique where an object is drawn face on, and
the side is projected back at 40 degrees and half length
Oblique
This is a shading technique where pen or pencil is overlaid at differing angles
to show different depth of colour
Hatching
This is a technique used for rendering objects that involves each side being a
slightly darker version of the same colour.
3 tone shading
This is a rapidly executed freehand drawing that is not usually intended as a
finished work. A sketch may serve a number of purposes: it might record
something that the artist sees, it might record or develop an idea for later use
or it might be used as a quick way of graphically demonstrating an image, idea
or principle.
Sketching
This a computer design program used in schools. Simple or complex designs
can be created and then sent to a specified computer manufacturing system
e.g.: a Laser Cutter
2D Design
This is a term used in computer design programs where downloaded images
can be ‘broken down’ into individual lines
Exploding
These are individual components of a line, which can be manipulated to move
small sections of a drawing on a computer program
Nodes
This describes the quality of showing and demonstrating your work
Presentation
These are plastics that soften when heated, harden when cooled, and then
can be heated and softened many times.
Thermoplastics
These are plastics that, after being heated and softened during manufacture,
cannot be changed or softened by heating again
Thermosets
This is an electrically operated heating element that allows the user to heat
small areas of thermoplastics for reshaping
Strip Heater
A specification often refers to a set of documented requirements to be satisfied
by a material, design, product, or service.
Specification
