CVA Flashcards
1
Q
TIA
A
- usually linked to atherosclerotic thrombus causing temporary blood flow interruption
- most often in carotid and vertebrobasilar arteries
- may indicate future CVA
2
Q
Stroke in Evolution
A
CVA usually caused by thrombus that gradually progresses.
Total neurological deficits not seen for 1-2 days after onset
3
Q
Causes of stroke (%)
A
Ischemic - 80-90%
Hemorrhagic - 10-20%
4
Q
What percentage of ischemic strokes are caused by embolus?
A
20%
5
Q
Characteristics of embolus stroke
A
- MCA most commonly affected (cardioembolus from internal carotid)
- sudden onset of occlusion > higher permanent damage of distal tissues
- often presents with HA
6
Q
Characteristics of thrombotic CVA
A
- variable presentation
- usually occurs during sleep or upon awakening from an MI or post-surgically
7
Q
Characteristics of hemorrhagic stroke
A
- rupture in blood supply
- often precipitated by HTN or trauma
- symptoms: HA, vomiting, high bp, abrupt onset of sxs
- worst outcomes
