CVA Flashcards

1
Q

TIA

A
  • usually linked to atherosclerotic thrombus causing temporary blood flow interruption
  • most often in carotid and vertebrobasilar arteries
  • may indicate future CVA

Q

Stroke in Evolution

A

CVA usually caused by thrombus that gradually progresses.

Total neurological deficits not seen for 1-2 days after onset

Q

Characteristics of embolus stroke

A
  • MCA most commonly affected (cardioembolus from internal carotid)
  • sudden onset of occlusion > higher permanent damage of distal tissues
  • often presents with HA

Q

Characteristics of hemorrhagic stroke

A
  • rupture in blood supply
  • often precipitated by HTN or trauma
  • symptoms: HA, vomiting, high bp, abrupt onset of sxs
  • worst outcomes
