Cuando era niño era tímido y un poco nervioso.
When I was a boy I was shy and a little nervous
Tengo dos hermanos mayores y un hermano gemelo.
I have 2 older brothers and a twin brother
No tengo hermanas.
I don’t have susters
Cuando era niño, la familia era pobre, como todos los demás en nuestro pueblocito.
When I was a boy, the family was poor, like all the others in out village
Desde los 7 años, mi hermano gemelo y yo solíamos tener que ayudar con las tareas domésticas.
From 7 years old my twin brother and I had to help with household chores
Solíamos hacer recados en la tienda de comestibles,
we used to do errands to the shops
lavar la vajilla y sacar la basura.
wash the pots and take out the trash
Nuestros hermanos mayores no tenían que hacer nada.
Our older brothers did not have to do anything
El mayor, se llama Stephen, es 7 años mayor que nosotros
The oldest, called Stephen, is 7 years older than us
.. y salía con su novia cuando era adolescente.
.. and used to go out with his girlfriend when he was a teenager
El del medio, se llama Kevin, es 4 años mayor que nosotros.
the middle one, called Kevin, is 4 years older than us
Era el hijo favorito y estaba malcriado y solía intimidarnos.
He was the favourite son and was spoilt and used to bully us
Nuestra madre tenía algunos problemas mentales..
Our mother had some mental problems..
.. y tenía que tomar tranquilizantes para calmarse.
… and had to take tranquillisers to calm down
Hoy en día nos damos cuenta de que era bipolar.
Nowadays we realise that she was bipolar
Nuestro padre era mucho más tranquilo,
Or father was much quieter
pero trabajaba fuera varios días a la semana como conductor de camión.
but worked away several days a week as a lorry driver
Nos emocionábamos cuando llegaba a casa el sábado por la mañana.
We used to get excited when he arrived home on Saturday morning
Como nuestros padres estaban tan ocupados,
As our parents were so busy..
teníamos que asumir la responsabilidad y cuidarnos el uno al otro.
we had to take responsibility and care for each other
Si alguna vez cometíamos un error torpe,
If we ever committed a clumsy error,
mamá reaccionaba exageradamente y nos castigaba.
mam used to over react and punish us
Incluso solía usar castigos físicos.
She even used to use physical punishments
No estaba bien, pero muchas familias eran iguales.
It wasn’t right but many families were the same
No había terapeutas familiares en los años 60
there were no family therapists in the 60s
