Lawyers
The two sides of the case, the prosecutor and the defense attorney.
Prosecutor
They represent the State/the people and they work to prosecute those who violate criminal laws. They are to gather evidence and prove that the defendant is guilty.
Defense Attorney
Is the lawyer who represents the defendant. They have to make sure the judge/jury feels their client is not guilty(Reasonable Doubt).
Jury
The jury are the ones who decide if the defendant is guilty or not. They hear all the evidence and statements presented by the lawyers.
Verdict
The decision of the jury and it must be unanimous.
Unanimous
Meaning everyone must agree
Hung Jury
When there cannot be an unanimous (agreement) decision, then a “hung jury” is what happens.
Voir dire
When the prosecutor and defense attorney participates in the selection process of the jury.
Judge
They look over the trial, making sure that the attorneys proceed fairly and follow the law. They must also make sure the defendant has a lawyer or has given up that right.
Perjury
If a witness lies under oath, they will be charged with perjury.
Witnesses
The lawyers have witnessed to testify under oath and to prove the defendant’s guilt or lack of guilt. If they lie under oath they will be charged with perjury.
Court reporter
They are the record keeper of the whole conversation that takes place when court is in session. The court reporter’s records is called trail transcript and becomes necessary if the verdict is appealed.
Court officer
They have the responsibility to maintain order in the courtroom. They do this by
1) providing security in the courthouse;
2) holds prisoners in custody when they are to appear for trial;
3) oversee and protect the jury during a jury trial, and the judge at all times.
