Vocabulary that will be tested
Investigation
The first stage of the criminal justice system, and as usually conducted by police officers.
Adjudication
The second stage of the criminal justice system, where opposing parties attempt to find the defendant guilty or not guilty.
Sentencing
The final stage of the criminal justice system. If the defendant is found not guilty, this stage is skipped.
Arraignment
A defendant’s first appearance in front of a judge and the beginning of the adjudication stage. The defendant is presented with the charges against them.
Prosecutor
The attorney who represents the state in a criminal proceeding. They decide whether there’s enough evidence to bring a defendant to trial.
Defendant
The person accused of a crime.
Defense Attorney
The lawyer responsible for the defendant.
Voir Dire
The process for jury selection. (The prosecutor and defense attorney participates in the selection)
Hung Jury
When a criminal trail jury does not reach a unanimous verdict.
Verdict
The final decision of the jury.
Convict
To find a criminal defendant guilty.
Acquit
To find a criminal defendant NOT guilty.
Recidivism
A term used to describe convicted criminals who, after serving time in prison, reoffend (commits further crimes).
