POINT - JUSTICE OF THE PEACE COURT
Role : Determine guilt and provide justice with less serious cases like road traffic accidents
Power : they have the power to provide punishment that are limited to 60 days imprisonment or a fine up to £2500 or both.
Example: In 2020, Jane Strang appeared at Paisley Justice of Peace Court for abusive behaviour
POINT - SHERIFF COURTS
Role: Their role is to determine guilt and provide justice with serious crimes. Depending on how serious the crime is, they will decide whether a jury is needed or not
Power : Just a judge- a maximum prison sentence of 12 months or a fine up to £1000
With a Jury: A longer sentence or unlimited fine
Example : Natalie Mcgarry former SNP, was found guilty as Glasgow Sheriff court for embezzlement and was jailed
