What is ethnonational conflict?
Conflict occurring between different nations
What is ethnonationalism?
A powerful emotional attachment to one’s nation that occurs when a minority nation within a state feels different from the rest of the state’s people
What is self-determination and what can it lead to?
When a minority feels that they do not have enough self-determination, or the power to control their own territory and destiny, ethnonationalism can lead to conflict
Give an example of ethnonationalism gone bad
The Chechen people in Russia have a violent history with the russian government
What is irredentism?
A movement by a nation to reunite its parts when they have spread across other borders
What is a satellite state?
A country controlled by another, more powerful state
What is a frontier?
A region where boundaries are very thinly or weakly developed, zones where territoriality is unclear and not well established
What is definition (in boundary creation)
The phase in which the exact location of a boundary is legally described and negotiated
What is delimitation?
The step when the boundary’s definition is drawn onto a map
What is a definitional boundary dispute?
A fight over the language of the border agreement in a treaty or boundary contract
What is a locational boundary dispute?
When the conflicting parties agree on the definition but not on where the boundary exists on Earth or on the map
What is an operational boundary dispute?
A conflict over the way a boundary should operate or function, such as if migration should be allowed across the border
What is an Allocational boundary dispute?
A fight over resources that may not be divided by the border, such as natural gas reserves beneath the soil
What is a state’s core?
The region in a state wherein political and economic power is concentrated, like the nucleus of a cell, is a state’s core
What is a multicore state?
Countries that have more than one core region
