Cranium Contents Flashcards
Meninges: layers
Dura mater = external, thick, fibrous
Arachnoid mater = thin, intermediate
Pia mater = delicate internal
True spaces
Always present
Subarachnoid = filled ith CSF
Potential spaces
Not always present, occur after trauma
Extra/epidural
Subdural
Extradural space
Btw. skull + dura
Normally, outer layer of dura = firmly attached to skull
Trauma - can become fluid-filled + cause vascular hemorrhage
Bleeding = rupture of meningeal a. or dural venous sinus - extradural hematoma
Dura mater
2 layers in brain, 1 in SC
External periosteal = attached to skull + contains meningeal a.
Internal meningeal = close to arachnoid, follows inner contour + continuos with SC dura through foramen magnum
Layers separate - dural partitions + sinuses
Dural partitions: name
Falx cerebri
Falx cerebelli
Tentorium cerbelli
Sellar diaphragm
Falx cerebri
Largest
Btw. hemispheres, in longitudinal fissure
Ant. = crista gali
Post. = int. occipital protuberance + tentorium
Free border = associated with corpus
Fuses with tentorium, post. to corpus
Falx cerebelli
Vertical
Btw. cerebellar hemispheres
Attached int. occipital crest + tentorium
