Cranial Nerves Flashcards
I
Olfactory nerve; sensory, special sense of smell
II
Optic nerve; sensory, special sense of vision
III
Oculomotor nerve; motor and parasympathetic, motor to eye muscles and upper eyelid
IV
Trochlear nerve; motor, motor to one eye muscle
V
Trigeminal nerve;
sensory from scalp, forehead, nose, upper/lower eyelid, and cornea, sensory from palate, upper jaw, upper teeth and gums, nasal cavity, cheek;
motor: muscles of mastication, middle ear, throat;
greatest sensory function of all cranial nerves
VI
Abducens nerve;
somatic innervates 1/6 of muscles responsible for eye movement
VII
Facial nerve;
somatic, sensory, and parasympathetic;
all muscles of facial expression, a muscle in middle ear, 2 hyoid muscles;
sensory for taste;
parasympathetic salivary glands of mouth and lacrimal glands of eye
VIII
Vestibulococchlear nerve;
sensory inner ear responsible for special senses of hearing and balance
IX
Glossopharyngeal nerve;
somatic motor: 1 muscle of pharynx
sensory: taste
parasympathetic: trasmits from receptors in carotid arteries (blood pressure, CO2, O2, pH monitoring)
X
Vagus nerve;
somatic motor: soft palate, pharynx, and larynx;
sensory: taste;
parasympathetic: regulates functions of thoracic and abdominal organs, carries fibers to heart and lungs and digestive organs
XII
Hypoglossal nerve;
somatic motor: tongue muscles
XI
Accessory nerve;
somatic motor: innervation to sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles
major component is spinal root
