Cranial Nerves Flashcards
1
Q
1 Olfactory
A
- Smell nerve
- Makes connections in the cerebral cortex of the temporal bones
2
Q
2 Optic Nerve
A
- Photoreceptor
- Enter the optic foramen just superior to the sella turcica
3
Q
3 Oculomotor Nerve
A
- Produces extrinsic and intrinsic eyeball movements
- Originates in the mesencephalon and passes to the eye via the superior orbital fissure
- Trauma to this nerve can cause palsy on the same side as the injury
4
Q
4 Trochlear
A
- Very small motor nerves that originates in the mesencephalon and passes the the superior orbital fissure
- Controls the downward and lateral eyeball movements
5
Q
5 Trigeminal
A
- Originates in the pons
- Senses touch, temp, and pain
- Inervates the masseter, temporalis, and pterygoids
6
Q
6 Abducens Nerve
A
- Originates in the pons
- Moves the eye laterally
7
Q
7 Facial Nerve
A
- Arises from the pons
- Inervates the muscles for facial expression, stimulates salivary glands, and increases secretions of tears
- Senses taste from anterior two thirds of the tongue
8
Q
8 Vestibulocohlear nerve
A
- Arises from the inner ear
- Monitors equilibrium and balance
- Responsible for hearing
9
Q
9 Glossopharyngeal nerve
A
- Innervates the posterior portion of the tounge, swallow reflex and saliva secretion from parotid gland
- Originates in the medulla oblongata
- Bitter taste sense
10
Q
10 Vagus nerve
A
- Originates from medulla oblongata
- Innervates most throat and larynx muscles
- Receive input from the throat
11
Q
11 Accessory Nerve
A
- Comes from medulla oblongata and the spinal cord
- Helps swallow
- Innervates trapezius and sternocleidomastoids
12
Q
12 Hypoglossal
A
- Innervates the tongue muscles
- Damage to this nerve leads to impaired swallowing and difficulty speaking
