Place
The web of characteristics, flows and perceptions that are all attached to a specific location.
What aspects make up a ‘place’?
- Location
- Physical characteristics

What aspects of a place are constantly changing?
Everything apart from location
Location
‘Where’ a place is, eg. coordinates
Locale
Takes into account the effect that people have on their setting.
Sense of place
Refers to the subjective and emotional attachment people have to a place.
Localism
An affection for or an emotional ownership of a particular place.
Regionalism
Consciousness of and loyalty to a distinct region with a population that shares similarities.
Nationalism
Loyalty and devotion to a nation which creates a sense of national consciousness.
Insider perspective
Someone who is familiar with a place and feels welcome there.
Outsider perspective
Someone who feels unwelcome or excluded from a place.
Give examples of factors that can make a person feel like an insider or outsider:
Age, sexuality, gender
Experienced places
Places people have spent time in which has created a sense of place.
Media places
Places that people have not been to, but have created a sense of place for through their depiction in the media.
Near places
Geographically close to where a person lives
Far places
Geographically distant from where a person lives
Where are people more likely to feel like insiders?
In near places, as they are more likely to have experienced them and feel more comfortable in them.
How has globalisation affected people’s experience of geographical distance?
- Travel tech improvements = far places are quicker to get to and can be experienced more easily and frequently.
- ICT improvements = increased familiarity with media places.
- Internet = people can remain close with people + activities in far places.
Placelessness
Idea that globalisation is making distant places look and feel the same.
