Corrections - Cellulitis & NF Flashcards
What is the most common preexisting medical condition in patients with NF?
Diabetes
What diabetic drug is a particular risk factor for NF? Why?
SGLT-2 inhibitors - increases urinary excretion of glucose, increasing the chances of developing a urinary and genital infection, including NF.
What is the most commonly affected site in NF?
Perineum (Fournier’s gangrene)
Risk factors for NF?
1) skin factors: recent trauma, burns or soft tissue infections
2) diabetes mellitus
3) IVDU
4) immunsuppression
How can chickenpox result in NF or cellulitis?
Cellulitis –> From 2ary bacterial infection of the lesions.
NF –> Invasive group A streptococcal soft tissue infections may occur resulting in NF
What increases the risk of 2ary bacterial infection of the lesions in chickenpox (and therefore increased risk of NF and cellulitis)?
NSAIDs
Why do patients with orbital cellulitis require admission to hospital for IV antibiotics?
Due to risk of cavernous sinus thrombosis and intracranial spread
What can increase the risk of necrotising fasciitis in patients with chicken pox?
NSAIDs
What is the Abx of choice for cellulitis in pregnancy if the patient is penicillin allergic?
Erythromycin
Is erythromycin or clarithromycin safer in pregnancy?
Erythromycin
