Connective Tissue Flashcards
What type of connective tissue is found direclty beneath the basophilic surface epithelium in this biopsy?
Loose connective tissue provides support to other structures (e.g. epithelial tissues, blood vessels, muscles).
Highly cellular and vascular with loosely packed collagen (and some elastic & reticular fibers)
This cell resides in lymph nodes and captures & phagocytoses pathogens and malignant cells.
Macrophages
Aortic aneurysm is likely due to a deficiency in what fiber?
Marfan’s syndrome is defective elastic fiber formation (specifically, fibrillin-1).
Where do you expect to find meissner corpuscles? What is it for?
Dermal papilla
Light touch and discriminating between 2 points on the skin
What step of collagen formation is vitamin C dependent?
Hydroxylation of prolien and lysine residues during posttranslational processing.
What cell is involved in the the inflammatory reaction of allergies and increased vascular permeability?
Mast cells
What connective tissue component determines viscosity of connective tissue and provides a protective barrier that limits the spread of deep-seeded bacterial infecitons in the skin?
Ground substance: highly hydrated mixture of GAGs + proteoglycans + glycoproteins in the extracellular space
High viscosity lubricates joints and internal organs while acting as a barrier to invading bacteria
What component of connective tissue links cells to the ECM to help maintain tissue integrity and regulate cell behavior? What are some examples?
Glycoproteins, such as fibronectin and laminin
They contain N- or O-linked oligosaccharides and reside in the ECM. They bind components of the ECM as well as cell surface repceotrs (e.g. integrins) to maintain tissue integrity and provdie signals for cell proliferation and migration
Biopsy of the small intestine. Which type of connective tissue is the cellular layer that lies below the simpel columnar, lining epithelium?
Lamina propria: cellular layer of losoe connective tissue underlying the linign epithelium of the GI tract; has loosely packed collagen adn some elastic.
A section of the aorta is examined. What is the tissue type in the region indicated by the double arrow? What cell made it?
Elastic connective tissue is found in large elastic arteries and some vertebral ligaments as well as in the ECM.
Though fibroblasts usually synthesize the connective tissue components of the ECM, smooth muscle cells in large arteries likely synthesized these elastic lamellae.
A 38 yo woman delivers a stillborn. This is the fetla skull. What kind of tissue is this?
Mesenchyme: gives rise to all connective tissue types (as well as muscle tissue, vascular, and urogenital systems)
Mesenchymal cells are small and spindle-shaped with fine and sparse collagen fibers scattered between them.
What are the only tissues that are reticular fiber-dominant?
Liver, bone marrow, spleen, and lymphoid tissue
Mast cells’ cytoplasm SHOULD be
blue (basophilic)
Identifying lymphocytes
It’s mostly nucleus with very little cytoplasm. Differentiate between it and mitotic figures becuase the nucleus is round.
Where are you most likely to find a mast cell?
Near a blood vessel
