Concepts 9.1-9.3 (Physiology) Flashcards
Define a signal
Any act or structure that influences the behaviour of other organisms (receivers), and which evolved specifically because of that effect
Define a cue
An incidental source of information that may influence the behaviour of a receiver, despite not having evolved under selection for that function
What are some abiotic environmental changes?
Temperature, humidity, sunlight
What are some biotic environmental changes?
Abundance of food, competitors, predators/pathogens/parasites
What are the four main types of sensory receptors?
Chemoreceptors, thermoreceptors, mechanoreceptors, photoreceptors
What is the phytochrome photoreceptor Pr?
Absorbs red light and converts it to Pfr (usually during day)
What is the phytochrome photoreceptor Pfr?
Absorbs far-red light and converts back to Pr (usually at night)
What kind of light is more abundant in sunlight?
Red light
What is the purpose of amyloplasts?
Produce, store and breakdown starch in plants
What is the difference between positive and negative thigmotropism?
Positive = plant grows towards touch stimuli
Negative = plant grows away from touch stimuli
What is the difference between positive and negative gravitropism?
Positive = plant grows in direction of gravity
Negative = plant grows away from gravity
What are the three main levels of the somatosensory system?
Receptor, circuit, perceptual
Which sensations are not detected by the somatosensory system?
Vision, hearing, taste and smell
