Concepts 11.1-11.3 (Physiology) Flashcards
Advantages of asexual reproduction?
- 100% of population can reproduce
- Requires less time and energy (faster)
- No mate required
Disadvantages of asexual reproduction?
- Offspring genetically identical to parents
- Less adaptable to new and unfavourable conditions
Advantages of sexual reproduction?
- Genetic variation in offspring
- More adaptable to new and unfavourable conditions
Disadvantages of sexual reproduction?
- Requires a mate
- 50% of population can reproduce
- Requires more time and energy (slower)
What is budding?
In budding the outgrowth (new organism) develops whilst it is still attached to the parent organism
What is fission?
Separation of the body into two new bodies
What is fragmentation?
A piece of the parent organism is removed and develops into a new individual organism
What is parthenogenesis?
The development of a new organism from an egg cell that is haploid
Name 3 types of vegetative propagation
Runners, rizomes, bulbs
What is a hermaphrodite?
A sexually reproducing organism that produces both male and female gametes.
When is hermaphroditism advantageous?
Likelihood of finding a mate is very low or the reproductive season is very short.
What does monoecious mean?
Having both the male and female reproductive organs
What are angiosperms?
Flowering plants
What is the haploid stage for angiosperms?
Gamete-producing gametophyte
What is the diploid stage for angiosperms?
spore-producing sporophyte
