Concepts 18.1-18.3 Flashcards
What are pests and weeds?
Organisms with populations that are “too large”
What is the ‘enemy release hypothesis’?
- When species are introduced usually there enemies aren’t
- Without enemies population of introduced species are less limited
What is classical biological control?
The deliberate importation and release of new species
What is augmentative biological control?
Repeated rearing and release of natural enemies
What is conservation biological control?
Promoting or protecting existing natural enemies
What are the key to success for classical biological control species?
- Host specificity
- High reproductive rates
- Good searching ability
- Must occur at same time as host
What is inoculative augmentation?
Control by released enemies and their progeny
What is inundative augmentation?
Control exclusively by the released enemies
How can conservation biological control be developed?
Providing
- Food sources
- Permanent shelter or habitats
- Favourable microclimates
- Alternate prey or hosts
What is an epidemic disease?
Increase rapidly in smaller geographic areas
What is an endemic disease?
Constantly present in a population subset
What are some options for disease control?
- Vaccination
- Culling
- Behavioural modifications (e.g. quarantine)
- Reducing vectors
