Concepts 10.1-10.3 (Physiology) Flashcards
What are ectotherms?
An organism who’s body temperature regulation relies on the external environment
What are endotherms?
An organism that internally regulates its body temperature
Why does reaction rate increase with temperature?
Kinetic energy
What happens after an organism has reached their optimal temperature level?
The reaction rate falls
What are heterotherms?
Body temperature fluctuates
What are homeotherms?
Body temperature remains stable
What is radiation?
Transfer of heat through electromagnetic waves (mostly infrared)
What is conduction?
Transfer of heat through a material/object
What is convection?
Transfer of heat by movement of fluids (liquids or gases)
What is evaporation?
Heat transfer from when liquid changes to gas
Would an organism with a high SA:V ratio have low or high thermal conductance?
high (lose heat faster)
What is allometry?
The relationship between body mass and physiological or morphometric characteristics
What is the metabolic rate scale with body mass rate in most creatures?
0.75
What is the difference between basal metabolic rate (BSR) and standard metabolic rate (SMR)
SMR takes into account temperature
Does metabolic rate increase with body size?
no. not per gram
