How will rising sea levels effect the coasts?
Cliffs are being undercut and many of them will be undercut, collapse and retreat
How will rising sea levels affect people?
As the cliffs are being eroded structures like cafes and in some cases houses are being destroyed. This means that people’s livelihoods will be affected
What are storm surges?
When low pressure air causes sea levels to rise. Storm winds combine with the sea level rise to create huge and powerful waves
What is is hold the line?
This is when people use sea defences to stop erosion meaning that the coast stays where it is. This is very expensive
What is advance the line?
Building new defences on the seaward side of the original defences. This is very expensive.
What is strategic retreat/realignment?
Gradually letting low value areas on the shoreline erode backwards, allowing high value areas to be protected. Compensation is given
What is no active intervention?
Where there are no investments in costal defences or operations
What is holistic ICZM?
It is where the coastline is looked at as a whole. They take in factors like property value and secondary effects. It is beneficial in the long term for high value properties and is cheaper and more natural
