Compare/Contrast Photosynthesis and Cell Respiration Flashcards
Similarities of photosynthesis and cell respiration
Both have an ATP Synthase.
These processes both have buildups of H+ and the ATP Synthase transports the hydrogen ions down the concentration gradient.
Both have a cycle in them
Both processes produce substances (food or ATP) that correlate with the organisms energy
Both happen in cell membrane of a prokaryote
Both use electron carriers
Reverse reactions of each other
Differences of photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is the process by which plants, algae, bacteria and other organisms use atmospheric carbon dioxide and sunlight to create glucose, oxygen, and water
Photosynthesis occurs within chloroplasts in plant cells
Photosynthesis has two reactions: light dependent reactions and light independent reactions.
Differences of cell respiration
Cellular respiration is a set of metabolic reactions and processes that take place in the mitochondria of cells of eukaryotes to convert glucose into energy in the form of ATP and release waste products.
Cell respiration occurs in cytoplasm/mitochondria (eukaryotes)
Cellular respiration produces heat and energy - photosynthesis produces oxygen, glucose, and water
Cellular respiration consists of glycolysis, Krebs cycle, and the electron transport chain
Cellular respiration occurs in ALL cells while photosynthesis only occurs in plant cells, algae and some protists
Cell resp electron carrier is NAD+ and photosynthesis is NADP+
