Compare/Contrast Mitosis and Meiosis Flashcards
Similarities between mitosis and meiosis
both cell division cycles.
Have prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase and cytokinesis
Both produce new cells (daughter cells)
Both replicate the DNA before the cell division(s) happen
Differences of mitosis
happens regularly in the body and is used to replace cells that are too big, or too old. Creates a copy of mother cell with same number of chromosomes and same DNA (unless errors occur). (grow and repair)
Ends up with 2 cells - genetically identical to parent cell
No crossing over
Diploid
Sister chromatids line up on metaphase plate
Differences of meiosis
is the division to make sex cells(sperm and eggs).
The cells have half the number of chromosomes as the parent cell for combination in fertilization.
Four daughter cells - genetically different from parent cell
2 phases: meiosis I and Meiosis II
Haploid
Allows for genetic diversity and biological differences.
Crossing over increases genetic variation. (prophase I)
In meiosis II the genetic material in the cells does not duplicate
Joining of Homologous Chromosomes
Tetrads line up on metaphase I metaphase plate
