Communities and Biomes Flashcards
What is a community?
group of interacting organisms that occupy the same area at the same time
What is a limiting factor?
any abiotic or biotic factor that restricts the numbers, reproduction, or distribution of organisms
What is Primary Succession?
Creation of new colonies of organisms in new areas where no soil exists
Does primary succession take a long or short time?
long time because rock needs to break down to create soil
What are pioneer species?
1st Organisms to move into an area
In primary succession, communities continue to grow until what?
limiting factors, environmental change, or natural disasters
What is a climax community?
stable, mature; not much change occuring
What is secondary succesiion
“old” species die and new species move in after a drastic change to the community (ex: natural disaster)
Does secondary succession take as long as primary succession? Why or why not.
No because soil is already established.
How are biomes defined?
by a unique set of abiotic factors and characteristics ecological community.
