COMMUNICATION Flashcards
How many MIC PTT switches does each pilot have?
4 Control Wheel Audio control panel Glareshield MIC switch Hand MIC PTT switch
How is the boom mic enabled after oxygen mask usage?
Close left O2 mask door and push RESET/TEST switch
How many audio panels are installed on the -200/-300?
- 300: 4
- 200: 3
List the different audio recorded by the cockpit voice recorder?
Any audio transmitted or received by the FLT deck as selected on the ACP as well as FLT deck area conversations
Which VHF system can be used for data transmission?
VHF C and R systems
When will DATA be displayed on the RTP active frequency window?
Provided the selected VHF radio is the default DATA radio, when a new FREQ is selected in the STBY window
Describe the VHF radio stuck microphone protection?
EICAS message RADIO TRANSMIT if stuck for more than 30 sec.
On ground with both Engines off having transmitted for more than 35 seconds
What does dashes in the RTP frequency window indicate?
Radio has failed or is disconnected
Where can HF sensitivity be set?
On the Radio Tuning panel (RTP)
When does the HF antenna tune?
When an HF transmitter is keyed after a FREQ change
How many HF antennas are installed?
1, common to both HF radios
Can both HF systems simultaneously receive from the common antenna?
No
How many radio systems are monitored by SELCAL?
3 VHF and 2 HF
How is a SATCOM call terminated?
When either party ends the call
Which system is used to communicate with the ground engineer?
The FLT interphone system
What is the purpose of the service interphone switch on the overhead panel?
To connect to the Flight interphone system through the service interphone switch
What PA announcement has the highest priority?
FLT deck announcement from an ACP
How is a call initiated to a flight attnedant station?
Select “CAB tx select switch” on an ACP and push the mic/interphone switch or call from the handset
How is a priority call from the cabin indicated on the flight deck?
EICAS message “CABIN ALERT”
How can a purser call be initiated from the ACP?
Press CAB transmitter select switch twice within 1 second
What is the approximate range for a VHF signal at 35’000 ft?
200 nm
What does the “V B R” selections on the ACP mean?
The VBR selector is the Navigation Filter Selector. It filters VOR, ADF, ILS or DME audio. V=Voice, only the voice audio is heard B=Both, both the voice and range audio are heard R=Range audio(morse code) is heard
What does the “APP” selector on the ACP mean?
The APP selector is the Approach Receiver Selector and selects the approach receiver to be monitored. APP L=left ILS APP C=center ILS APP R=right ILS MKR=marker beacon
What are the two ways you can answer a call from the cabin?
To take a cabin call, you can either pick up the handset and talk through it like a normal phone. You can also press the CAB call/mic button to take the call and then talk by pushing up the mic switch. There is no need to press the receiver button to listen if the speaker button is pressed. If a head set is worn, the other pilot not taking the call can listen in by either pressing the call/mic button or push the receiver button
What is the effect of using AM button for the HF radio?
The HF radio always transmit in a single sideband so the AM switch only affects the received signal.
What is the purpose of squelch and how can you turn it ON or OFF?
If you push and hold a Radio Tuning Switch, it removes the automatic squelch on the selected VHF radio until the switch is released. Squelch is used to suppress the sound of channel noise when the radio is not receiving a transmission. Squelch can be opened, which allows all signals entering the receiver to be heard. This can be useful when trying to hear distant or otherwise weak signals.
What is the purpose of the “Service Interphone Switch”?
The service interphone system provides voice communication between ground crew stations at various locations around the aircraft. The systems can be connected to the FLT interphone system through the service interphone switch. With the switch to ON, it connects the service and FLT interphone systems.
What is the difference between having the cockpit voice recorder switch in AUTO compared to ON when you enter the aircraft?
With the switch to AUTO, the cockpit voice recorder runs from first engine start until 10 min after last engine shutdown. With the switch to ON, the voice recorder runs until first engine start, then is spring-loaded to AUTO.
What is the difference between the CAPT/NORM/FO selections on the OBS audio selector?
In the NORM position, the First Observer ACP is connected to the First Observers hand mic, headphone, boom mic and oxygen mask mic.
In the CAPT and F/O position, it connects the Captains/First Officers hand mic, headphone, boom mic, oxygen mask mic, speaker, and MIC/INTERPHONE switches to the First Observers ACP.
