Problems in Lagos

  • Not enough formal jobs, 60% of the population work in informal economies, where pay can be as low as $1.25 a day
  • Only 40% of 9000 tonnes of rubbish a day is collected and there are large rubbish dumps containing toxic waste
  • 60%+ of the population are forced to live in slums with no water supply or sewage
  • 60% is mot connected to the state water supply leading to contamination with sewage and water. High prices from informal sellers
  • little access to sewers causing cholera as the sewage goes straight into the lagoon
  • There are not enough schools or healthcare facilities

A

RICH
Gated communities like on Banana Island
Live closer to work so dont have to face traffic or congestion
The wealthy run powerful generators to improve their quality of life
POOR
End up living in slums on land that floods or is close to polluting factories
Electricity is not available to the poorest, some communities take it turns to have electricity, they rely on polluting cooking stoves or petrol generators
Lack of waste disposal leads to severe health risks
