College 10 Flashcards
definition of stereotypes
- attributes of a category (chairs are stereotyped to have legs)
- attributes for a social category (smart people are stereotyped to have glasses)
- exaggerated overgeneralized beliefs
> often with implied consequences for evalutions (prejudices= vooroordeel) and behaviors (discrimination) towards that category
out-group homogeneity
strong stereotypical beliefs lead individuals to perceive members of a social category as more similar to each other
> because the attentional focus shifts form inter-individual to intergroup differences
in-group favouritism
favouring one’s in-group over other groups
realistic conflict theory
result of competition between groups for resources
social identity theory
own self-esteem is based on status one one’s group
prejudices
are the evaluations of members of a group, resulting from the aggregate valence of these stereotypical beliefs
discrimination
refers to behaviour that result from stereotypical beliefs and evaluations
two main functions of stereotypes
- easily process ambiguous information: comprehension
- for self-affirmation through derogating others
stereotype threat
being exposed to a negative stereotype of another group decreases own performance
> example: Asian American women in math task >worse performance when negative female stereotype primed
stereotype boost
being exposed to positive stereotype of own group lifts own performance
> example: Asian American women in math task > better performance when positive Asian stereotype primed
stereotype misperception task (SMT)
designed to tease apart stereotype activation and application in an implicit measure
- participants are asked to form impressions of people whose faces are shown in blurred drawings
processing tree models
stochastic models that, based on observable participant responses, allow for estimation of the probabilities of such unobservable processes taking place or not.
