CN V: Trigeminal Nerve Flashcards
From where does it emerge?
ventrolateral pons
What are the three divisions of the trigeminal nerve?
- ophthalmic (V1)
- Maxillary (V2)
- Mandibular (V3)
What does the ophthalmic (V1) branch give sensation to? (6 things)
- forehead and scalp
- conjunctiva and sclera
- skin over nose
- upper eyelid
What does the maxillary (V2) branch give sensation to? (8 things)
- anterior temple
- upper teeth/lip
- paranasal sinuses
- nasopharynx and nasal cavity
- palate
- sides of nose
- middle face
What does the mandibular (V3) branch give sensation to? (6 things)
- posterior temple
- lower teeth
- skin over chin, jaw, & lower lip
- anterior 2/3 of tongue (general sensation)
- tempomandibular joint
Trigeminal motor innervations (all from mandibular branch (V3))
- 4 muscles of mastication
- 2 suprahyoid muscles
- tensor tympani (middle ear; dampens vibrations)
- tensor veli palatini (palate)
4 Muscles of mastication innervated by CN V
- masseter (close)
- temporalis (close)
- medial pterygoid (close)
- lateral pterygoid (open)
What muscles make up the mandibular sling?
- masseter
- medial pterygoid
2 suprahyoid muscles innervated by CN V
- anterior belly of digastric
- mylohyoid
Through what foramen does the mandibular branch (V3) of CN V exit?
foramen ovale
Tested?
light touching on face
Pathology/disorder
- trouble chewing
- lack of sensation on face
Through what foramen does the maxillary branch (V2) of CN V exit?
Foramen rotundum
Through what foramen does the ophthalmic branch (V1) of CN V exit?
Superior orbital fissure
