Climate Change (14) Flashcards
Impact of CC on photosynthesis/Rubisco?
● In C3 plants
= Rubisco works when light exists.
● In C4 plants
= Rubisco works overtime.
Why does Rubisco work overtime in C4 plants?
To compensate for the inability of PEP to fixate CO2 effectively.
C3 plants/RUBP features of efficiency? (3)
• High [CO2].
• Low temperatures.
• High H2O supply.
C4 plants/PEP features of efficiency? (3))
• Low [CO2].
• High temperatures.
• Low H2O supply.
Which plants are going to be a bit more efficient & invade into the different biomes?
Argue for C3 plants BUT this is true for their response to CO2 not for their response to temperature.
Forests pathway?
= C3.
Grasslands pathway?
= C4.
Savannas pathway?
C3 and C4.
Fynbos & Succulent Karoo pathway?
= CAM.
If you consider that CC is only about CO2, which is the dominant photosynthetic pathway?
RUBP.
If you consider that CC is only about CO2 & Temperature, which is the dominant photosynthetic pathway?
PEP.
What do these changes mean for plantbiomes in SA?
- Imagine this in diagram form with various arrow sizes.
CC & WUE?
Stomata of C3 & C4 plants may respond differently to high [CO2] & may change depending on whether the guard cells change with high CO2.
2 Important things to note for exam approach?
● In-depth = Knowledge you’ve acquired.
● Breadth = Application.
