Classification and Evolution Flashcards
What is biological classification?
The process of placing living things into groups based on their characteristics/genes.
What are the benefits of classification? (3)
Predict characteristics.
Find evolutionary relationships.
Enable international recognition of organisms (common names lack precision).
What is phylogeny?
The study of the evolutionary relationships between organisms.
(the basis of classification)
What is taxonomy?
The practice and science of classification.
the grouping of organisms based on their evolutionary features into groups called taxa
What are the 8 taxa?
Domain Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species (dear king please can our friends go swimming)
What is the binomial naming system?
Underline when handwriting (italic when typed).
First the genus of the species using a capital.
Then the species name all lower case.
What are the 3 domains? What size ribosomes do they have?
Bacteria (70s ribosomes)
Eukarya (80s ribosomes)
Archaea (70s ribosomes)
What are the five kingdoms? (old system)
Prokaryotae (Bacteria) Protoctista (Eukarya) Plantae (Eukarya) Animalia (Eukarya) Fungi (Eukarya)
What is a species?
A group of organisms that can interbreed to produce fertile offspring.
What is modern evidence used in classification? (7)
DNA evidence
Haemoglobin/Cytochrome C polypeptide structure
rRNA nucleotide sequence
Cell membrane structure
Antibiotic sensitivity
Embryological evidence (developmental biology)
Fossil records (evolution)
How is the the protein Cytochrome C used in classification?
Protein used in respiration found in all living things.
There is variation in the amino acid sequence of this protein amongst different organisms. More differences suggesting the organisms are less closely related.
What is evolution?
Change in the genetic composition (allele frequency) of a population over many successive generations, as a result of natural selection acting on the genetic variation among individuals, which can result in the development of new species.
What is intraspecific variation?
Variation within a species, can be:
Genetic
Environmental
What is interspecific variation?
Variation between different species.
What is an organisms phenotype?
Observable physical or biochemical characteristics.
Genotype + environmental factors
