Class #5 - Hormones Flashcards
Multiple endocrine neoplasia Sx
Excessive growth
Visual prob. (pituitary)
Low blood sugar (pancreas)
Soft skull (Paratyoid)
Discovery of 1st hormone? By who and name?
Ernest Starling
Secretin
Hormones def?
Substance release by endocrine glands, chemical messenger that circulate in blood stream, to communicate with another part of the body
Secretin release?
Secretin release with rise of HCL in duodenum, signals pancreatice juices
Pituitary gland?
Master endocrine gland. Secrete 1ug per day of hormones.
PItuitary secretions?
Prolactin ->breast:milk
Somatotropin = GH
ACTH (adenocorticotropic hormone) -> Adrenals
FSH (Follicule stimulating hormone) -> Gonads
TSH (Thyroid stimulating hormone) -> Thyroid
Somatotropin?
Produce less with age. Rejuvenating effect yes, but neg. SE: High BP, increase plasma glucose, breast enlargement, carpal tunnel syndrome.)
hGH secretagogues?
Just mixture of AA
Bovine/porcine somatotropin?
Increase cow milk production/increase musc. mass of porc. But not used b/c people worried.
Thyroid gland?
Control metabolism
Hypothyroidism Sx? Causes?
Sluggishness, slow heart rate, cold skin, obesity.
Iodine deficiency, auto-immune (Hashimoto’s disease)
Hyperthyroidism Sx? Causes?
Anxiety, nervousness, rapid pulse, fatigue, rapid weight loss, protuding eyes.
Tumor, excess, iodine, auto-immune:Graves diseases
Treat. of hyperthyroidism?
Methimazole: block iodine formation. Radioactive iodine
Parathyroid number, release? Regulate?
4 glands, parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcium and phosphorus metabolism.
Calcitonin?
Released by thyroid put CA+ in bones
